SPCA volunteer gets new wheels

The vehicle was donated by a kind donor who wished to remain anonymous.

A DEDICATED Kloof and Highway volunteer, Elaine Cairns, received a pleasant surprise from a good Samaritan.

Cairns was presented with a new vehicle, a Nissan NP200. The vehicle was donated by a kind donor who wished to remain anonymous.

The outreach officer at the Kloof and Highway SPCA, Lisa Gadd, said Cairns’s car was stolen before Christmas last year.

The SPCA had to lend her one of the inspectorate vehicles. Cairns did not have funds to replace her car so that she could continue with her voluntary work in animal welfare.

“One of our inspectors was away on leave, we feared that Cairns would once again be without a vehicle,” said Gadd.

In January, the Kloof and Highway SPCA appealed to the community for anyone who was able to assist Cairns and her assistant, Doctor Mthombeni, with a vehicle.

Cairns has been a dedicated volunteer for eight years and voluntarily works in the Molweni area, assisting the Kloof and Highway SPCA, where she is well-known by the locals and countless animals rely on her help.

“Every day she travels out to Molweni to collect animals that are unwanted by their owners, animals requiring sterilisation and various other treatment, and brings them to the Kloof and Highway SPCA.”

Gadd said Mthombeni works closely with Cairns, acting as a translator, ensuring her safety, assisting her with her volunteer work, and being a future SPCA inspector in training, the duo are a regular sight in the Molweni community.

Cairns, Mthombeni and all the staff at the Kloof and Highway SPCA were overwhelmed with this generous donation.

“It was so humbling to see the gratitude and appreciation on Cairns’s face when the vehicle was unveiled,” added Gadd.
