Make the right retirement choices with new book

Henry Spencer's latest offering delves into the best possible choices to make for those that are nearing retirement.

HENRY Spencer delves back into the topic of retirement with his latest serious book, Retirement Choices, which adds to his more than 10 books currently in circulation.

The book focuses on a way to provide retirees with the various options available to them and that the choices they make regarding retirement is very often a one way street. “If you make a mistake it is very difficult to extricate yourself. In the first book I felt a bit presumptuous with my answers and then realised that people are individuals and that you can’t say what should or shouldn’t happen. In this book I have given readers the options available to them and then they can decide,” said Herny.

The book took about a year to write and has expanded on the different aspects of retirement. “I tried to start a writers’ circle in Pietermaritzburg and was told by the other authors that they all wrote to make money. I don’t. I write because it’s something that I really enjoy doing and have spent a number of years working in the field and feel that it is important to share the information,” he said.

Henry works in the retirement field, focusing in the care of elderly and vulnerable people. For the first 50 years of his life he worked in industry and in production related jobs and early into his 50s he chose to study. He started with sociology and religious studies through UNISA and completed his masters through Stellenbosch University in applied ethics. “I don’t think that one should stop studying and learning and satisfying one’s curiosity. You are never too old to stop studying,” said Henry.

Currently 74 years old, he works part time as a consultant in retirement related issues but spends most of his time writing books. His latest writing achievement is an eclectic blend of anecdotal, cynical and humorous. The book, Retirement Choices, is available at Exclusive Books or can be purchased via Henry at halfmens@telkmonsa.net for R216 per copy.
