Hillcrest pupils join coastal clean-up drive

The group of pupils from Hillcrest High School were one of 11 schools taking part in the international initiative.

GRADE 5 pupils from Hillcrest Primary School joined 10 other schools at uShaka Marine World to take part in the uShaka coastal clean-up initiative recently.

The pupils are part of LEAP (learning extension and acceleration programme) and the clean-up was an international event organised by Woolworths.

“The children had fun collecting an assortment of rubbish off the beach and were truly astonished to see just how much litter, in terms of plastic, polystyrene and cigarette butts, end up in our oceans and litter the beach,” said Kim Joubert, the marketing administrator at Hillcrest Primary School.

She said it was a worthwhile experience and the children were excited to participate in the drive. Each pupil received a black t-shirt, cap and goodie bag courtesy of Woolworths.
