Funds flow in for Hippo Rollers
The pupils at the Deutsche Schule Durban have raised enough funds to purchase three Hippo Rollers.
THE Deutsche Schule Durban took on a challenge from WESSA and Eco-Schools to host a fundraiser with its children to purchase Hippo Rollers.
Each class painted or drew their own part of a river and all of the pieces were placed together similar a puzzle, to make a longer river. The children took in R5 coins, which were placed onto the river to represent a flowing money river, which helped create a visual picture for them to see how much they had collected.
“Our aim was to collect R1500 which is enough for one Hippo Roller. As the children were very excited, we decided to carry on with the collection, and told the children if we collect enough money for three Hippo Rollers, they will have a civvies day on the last day of the term, as a reward,” said Hannah Mangenda, the marketing officer at Deutsche Schule Durban.
The school will donate the money to the Gift of the Givers, which will then give the Hippo Rollers to families in need. Hippo Rollers were designed in Africa and the 90l Hippo Water Roller allows women, children and the elderly to collect five times more water than a single bucket by simply rolling it along the ground. “It was specifically designed for use in tough rural conditions, with a long lifespan of five to seven years, often much longer,” said Hannah.
Since the start of the fundraiser, the children at the school have raised enough money to purchase three Hippo Rollers.
