Pupils reach out to White House residents
The Hillcrest Primary School pupils donated books to the residents of The White House in KwaNyuswa recently.
“THIS house is called the White House after the one in America as only very important people can stay in it,” said Russel Sthe Chili, owner of The White House Community Cente in KwaNyuswa.
This is how it was explained and introduced to the Grade 7 pupils at Hillcrest Primary School during a recent outreach visit to the organisation.
“I met Russel a couple of years ago and have since followed his and the White House’s progress and growth. So it was particularly special for me to take a group of Grade 7’s to this place to hand over books that had been donated on Literacy Day at our school,” said Cath Malcolm-Smith, the social responsibility coordiantor at the school.
The White House provides a loving and nurturing home for disabled children and for the elderly who do not have families who can provide for them. There are currently 54 residents who are looked after by Russel, his wife Hlengiwe, and 15 assistants. “By the time we left, the HPS children were totally in agreement on what a special man Russel is and the amazing work they are all doing for the people with special needs. We were all touched by how Russel refers to them as his family and his love for each of them was very clear,” said Kim.
