Man arrested for six counts of rape

The man who has been on the run since 2010 was caught in KwaDabeka on Monday.

POLICE have arrested a man believed to be a serial rapist, who has been on the run since 2010.

According to Col Thembeka Mbele, spokesman for KZN SAPS, the Inanda Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit made a break through when the 28-year-old man was arrested on Monday, 17 October for a string of rape charges in the KwaDabeka area.

“He was arrested in 2010, but later absconded his bail application conditions and was on the run since then. It is alleged that the man committed the offences at KwaDabeka, Pinetown and Inanda areas from 2010 until 2015,” said Mbele.

Mbele added that it is believed the man would walk with the victims and promise them jobs. While on the way, he threatened and dragged them to the nearby bushes or sports grounds where he allegedly raped them.

“A warrant for his arrest was issued by the court. He was linked to five of the six cases of rape through his DNA. He appeared in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody until 30 November,” said Mbele.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa praised the FCS unit for the sterling job in putting the accused behind bars. “As police members we are duty-bound to protect women and children from these heartless criminals,” he said.
