New Grade R classroom for Inchanga learners

Former Mayor, James Nxumalo who grew up in Inchanga thanked Key Motors for their generous donation to the community.

THE Key Foundation built a Grade R classroom for the 1000 Hills Community Helpers in Inchanga.

The 1000 Hills Community Helpers project was established in 1989 to cater for the needs of the Inchanga community.

In 2008, a community care centre comprising a health and wellness clinic, children’s infirmary, education and development facility was built.

This centre was named by the local community members as ‘Ikhaya Lo Thando’ (Home of Love) that would cater for the needs of orphaned and vulnerable children, supporting them with food and clothing.

This vision has grown from strength to strength to provide essential services to the people.

The idea of building a Grade R classroom for the centre was discussed between Brian Dixon from Key Motors and Dawn Leppan, CEO and founder at 1000 Hills community Helpers at the annual Key Foundation handover due to a lack of access within the area.

“With the assistance of Dale Southern, an application was sent to the GM Childlife Foundation to assist with the building of this facility. Upon receiving a positive response and an approval from GM Childlife, the team set about engaging various stakeholders to get the project underway.

“The project was made a reality within a very short space of time and thanks go out to all suppliers who were involved such as Elangeni, Nes Electrical and even the Key Pinetown associates who helped by giving up their weekend to paint the facility,” said director deputy manager, Brian Dixon.

The handover was also attended by former eThekwini Mayor, James Nxumalo who grew up in Inchanga.

Nxumalo thanked Key for their donation.

“This place is a rural area in which many of the children are orphans. This classroom will make a big difference.”
