Protect personal mail, warns Pinetown police
Residents have been urged to destroy post/mail with sensitive or personal info before disposing of it in bins.
PINETOWN police are urging the community to destroy all post with sensitive information discreetly as it could be used for fraudulent activities.
Pinetown SAPS communications officer, W/O Muzi Maphumulo said police have realised that people are being defrauded with information that is recklessly put into bins which subsequently land in the wrong hands.
“People are warned that they should destroy sensitive information before they throw them away. ID numbers, banking details, medical aid information, ownership of motor vehicle documents, etc must be disposed of correctly. These are sometimes suspected to be used by the fraudsters which they will defraud you through opening store accounts and even buy cars with your information,” said Maphumulo.
He added that the incoming post at home should also be secured because information can be stolen from post boxes.
“Some people leave the post unattended in a box which another person can access. The post boxes should be made in such a way that somebody cannot take out your letters, or the post should be taken immediately when they are delivered,” said Maphumulo.
He is hoping this awareness will help deter fraudsters.
