Shocking work by electricity department

Eight months later and still no repairs have been made to a Westville resident's electricity meter.

WESTVILLE resident, Jan Botha, was forced to fork out extra money to run a generator after attempts to restore electricity to a neighbouring property backfired.

According to Botha, his neighbour reported a power outage in June last year and the electricity department did a temporary repair by a installing a cable from his (Botha’s) electricity meter.

“After this, my electricity meter could not close and was exposed to the elements. In September there was an explosion of some sort and I reported it, but our electricity was not affected. In November, a few men from the department arrived, dug a hole by the meters and then left,” said Botha.

He said the problems began on 22 February as the lights began to dip and he smelt something burning.

His meter caught alight and he contacted the fire department.

“The fact that the meter boxes could not close due to the shoddy workmanship, led to the rainwater getting inside the box and I assume, created an electrical short that led to a fire. The shoddy workmanship at this supply point now carries huge costs the ratepayer must pay for.

“It is obvious that work performed was not supervised or checked. There is no work pride and the safety of citizens and their property appears to be of no concern to the electricity department of eThekwini,” said Botha.
