Fake Alzheimer’s volunteer cons businesses
The receipts the woman issued had no logo, NPO or BPO numbers on it.
ALZHEIMER’S South Africa KZN branch alerts the public of a scam artist operating in Durban.
Sara Benade, regional director of Alzheimer’s South Africa, said their organisation, was contacted by Network Configuration in Westville requesting an 18a certificate for funds paid to a woman selling raffle tickets on behalf of ‘Alzheimer’s South Africa’.
Assuming it was for a worthy cause the company gave R600 to the woman.
“We were immediately suspicious as we are not running any raffle and asked them to forward us any information available regarding the raffle,” said Benade.

Network Configuration subsequently sent the copies of the relevant receipts, which did not belong to the organisation.
The receipts had no logo, NPO or BPO numbers on it.
The company then provided the organisation with screens from their security cameras showing the woman in question at their reception as well as a photo of the car that she was driving.
“This is such an unfortunate incident as most caring organisations rendering services are themselves battling to raise funds and to have someone exploiting the generosity of businesses or individuals under false presentence is criminal,” said Benade.
Alzheimer’s South Africa – KZN Region are pursuing a fraud charge and warned other businesses and individuals to be wary of a woman going around selling raffle tickets.
“Most NPO’s have people phoning asking for donations, if individuals or businesses are not sure if the calls are above board please contact the relevant organisation with the name of the person phoning,” added Benade.
