St Mary’s DSG’s high school SPAR Star of the Month is Grade 10 learner, Jordyn Alford.
She achieved first place for both ballroom and Latin in Rumba in the Jungle, the latest International Dance Competition at Sun City and the largest Dancesport competition in South Africa.
Jordyn took part in the Pro-Am (professional-amateur) division, dancing with her coach as her partner.
The event was held in two of the main conference halls as well as the Super Bowl.
It was attended by eight countries and funded by the Department of Arts and Culture, televised on SABC News and supported by all four dance associations in South Africa.
Following her phenomenal performance, Jordyn was selected by the adjudicators for the prestigious section of Best of the Best during the gala event in the Sun City Super Bowl.
This section is by invitation only and allows all dancers from all sections and of all ages to compete against each another.
Adults are usually the only qualifiers but Jordyn was impressive enough to qualify.
After a breath-taking performance of all five Latin dances, (cha-cha, samba, rumba, Paso Doble and jive) Jordyn was awarded first place, taking the title of South Africa’s Best Latin Pro-Am dancer. Jordyn is already the SADTASF SA Champion in her section.
Melloney Rijnvis, from Dance2Dance International, added, “We are extremely proud of Jordyn and St Mary’s DSG can be very proud of nurturing such an incredible, dedicated and strong young woman.”
