WYEBANK Secondary School’s learners were proud to hand over their impressive collection of bread tags and bottle tops to Bread Tags for Wheelchairs recently.
This innovative programme, organised by Alvi Hamid, the acting head of department commerce, teaches the learners and the community the importance of looking after the environment, the harm plastic can cause if not recycled and helping support those in need.
“It ticks so many right boxes, especially as we head into the festive season,” said Alvi.
“They learn that bread-tags don’t need to end up on rubbish dumps but seedling trays, picture-frames, coat-hangers, cornices and skirtings, outdoor furniture, poles and decking can be made from them.”
“The pleasure of giving is so rewarding,” she said. By simply collecting bread-tags and cool drink tops, a wheelchair can be given to a person in need.
“Not only does that one person have independence and mobility, it honestly changes lives,” she concluded.
