WATCH: Sewage pollutes Palmiet River

The river has reportedly turned red because of the pollution.

REPORTS of fish and eels dying at the Palmiet River keeps pouring in as the water is badly polluted.

Lee D’ Eathe from the Palmiet River Watch said a badly polluted river was reported yesterday morning.

He said he was told that there was a blockage of the sewer line at Devon Road in Pinetown, which is very likely the cause of this pollution.

This morning the Highway Mail received reports that the river has now turned red.

“The situation is getting worse as I keep getting reports of fish and eels dying downstream. The issue was reported yesterday morning and we are waiting for the City to attend to it and give us feedback,” said D’ Eathe.

Highway snake catcher, Nick Evans, also discovered several dead fish at the Palmiet River on Friday morning (2 March) as he was releasing some of his rescued snakes.

Evans referred to the current pollution at the site as an “environmental crisis”.

“It’s unacceptable,” he said.

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
