Rebecca has the gift of the gab

St Mary's DSG, Kloof's high school SPAR Star of the Month - April 2018.

REBECCA Rogers, a Grade 11 learner at St Mary’s DSG, Kloof was selected as its high school SPAR Star of the Month.

She competed in the World Individual Debating and Public Speaking Championships at Bishops in Cape Town last week.

The championship event saw the South African Team compete against 120 individuals from countries such as Canada, USA and Australia.

Rebecca was one of the 19 individuals in Team South Africa, a position she received after competing in the national rounds in Pretoria in October last year. She made the finals in two categories; debating and after-dinner speaking.

She ended in 6th place for both categories, with an overall ranking of 16th in the competition.

The motion for the finals was, “This house would ban all companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook etc from encrypting their users data in such a way that the company cannot retrieve that data even under a court order.”

“This is a very prestigious international competition and we are incredibly proud of Rebecca’s achievements,” said the school’s marketing and communication’s administrator, Lisa Abbott.
