Highbury celebrates 115 years of existence

What was in Hillcrest in 1903? Highbury celebrates 115 years. Happy birthday, Highbury!

HIGHBURY Preparatory School celebrated its 115th birthday on Thursday, 19 April and the headmaster, Roland Lacock, asked the hall of Highbury boys to close their eyes and imagine themselves in a time capsule, travelling backwards 115 years.

He enthralled them with his vivid description of Hillcrest back in 1903, the year that Sibella McMillan founded Highbury Preparatory School.

“Hillcrest Old Main Road had no tar, so most of the year it was either dusty or muddy. There was only one General Trading Store. The best way to move around was using the steam train and there was only one telephone, which was at the train station and used for emergencies.

“The closest doctor was in Pinetown and the only minister in the area was in Pinetown too. There were about six little holiday cottages scattered about for Durban families who liked to escape the heat. This was the place that McMillan chose to open her school for boys, called Highbury,” said Lacock.

The school celebrated its 115th birthday with the Chapel Challenge run within the estate, which was made extra special by Zinka who donated colourful sachets of sunscreen that the boys thoroughly enjoyed using as face paint.

“The boys’ listening skills were tested from the morning’s assembly with team quizzes and everyone enjoyed delicious donuts.
