Local writers’ talent recognised

The members of the South African Writer's Circle hosted an exciting awards ceremony in the lead up to the group's 60th birthday.

THE South African Writers’ Circle held its annual awards luncheon at the White House in Hillcrest recently to honour and congratulate its members who qualified for the group’s numerous trophies.

“We were honoured to host Darryl Earl David as our speaker for the afternoon. Darryl has an impressive CV, he is the head of English at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Pietermaritzburg campus,” said the club’s chairman, Patrick Coyne.

Darryl is also working towards his PhD on Literary Tourism in the Karoo.

He has founded and curated many literary festivals, including the Schreiner Literary Festival in Cradock, the JM Coetzee Literary Festival, the Midlands Meander Literary Festival in Howick and the Breyten Breytenbach Boekefees in Montagu.

“We thank Darryl most sincerely for his forthright and enlightening talk and we wish him every success in helping move the initiative forward,” said Patrick.

The group meets on the third Saturday of the month at the Westville Library, Room G4.

Meetings begin at 11am and there is an invited speaker, followed by a light lunch on a bring and share basis.
