80 years of empowerment celebrated
To kick off celebrations, a handful of Kloof WI members hosted a stall at a local mall.
THE Kloof Women’s Institute (WI) celebrates its 80th birthday this year and to kick off celebrations its members hosted a stall at the Kloof Village Mall, encouraging membership and selling hand-made items.
The WI statement said it exists “to educate women to enable them to provide an effective role in the community, to expand their horizons and to develop and pass on important skills.”
The Kloof branch has more than 80 members who uphold this mantle. They meet to enjoy great fellowship, while listening to an interesting speaker each month over a delicious cup of tea.

Competitions are held every month for adult education, baking, bottling, floral art, crafts, handicrafts and horticulture. The judges give insightful and helpful feedback. Each month, there are also workshops on embroidery, crafts and cookery.
“The Kloof WI donate many knitted items to the Robin Hood Foundation, King Edward, Prince Mshiyani and RK Khan Hospitals, the Ethelbert Children’s Home and the Kloof Retirement Village. Bobby bears are made for children who are victims of rape. We also donate to Fulton School for the Deaf and to the WI retirement home in Richmond,” said the club’s president, Margaret Gardner.
Every so often, outings to places of interest are arranged. Recent trips have been to the Amazulu Palace and to the Royal Agricultural Show in Pietermaritzburg.
The group meets on the first Thursday of each month from 9am to noon at the Kloof Civic Hall. The cost is R20 per visitor or an annual subscription of R260. Please come and join us. Contact Margaret Gardner on 031 705 2429.
