Intersectional march to highlight gender-based violence in Durban

An intersectional march against gender-based violence will take place on Wednesday, August 1. Participants are being asked to wear black with a touch of red.

AN Intersectional march by womxn (click on the link to see an explanation why the word is spelled with an x) against gender-based violence, will take place on Wednesday, 1 August, in Durban along with other marches across the nation.

The march, led by a movement under the hashtag #TotalShutDown has caught flack by some for saying the gathering is not open to men, but on Tuesday, Beverly Motlhabani, who is the chair of the Durban organising committee of the local march said the march will be completely inclusive of all people.

Asked if this even included gender non-conforming (GNC), non-passing, non-binary (NB) and others, she said it would cover all people who face victimisation from gender-based violence.

“We are fully on board with all those who want to see an end to violence against all women,” said Motlhabani during a brief telephone interview with the Highway Mail.

The march organisers are also calling for a general shutdown of economic activity for the day, or at minimum during the half an hour between 1pm and 1.30pm to ensure that even those who are not in a position to march or leave work for the whole day, can add their voice to the march by not participating in economic activity between those hours.
#TheTotalShutDown march in Durban will begin on Wednesday at 8.30am at Curries Fountain and then proceed to City Hall.
“We have asked people to dress in black with a touch of red,” said Motlhabani who stressed that women of all political affiliations would be attending as the event is in no way associated with any political group or party.
“For this day we stand together,” she said adding that the voilence against women was considered a problem accross all political party lines.
