URBAN EDGE: Msiya challenges young people

His goal is to give young people hope.

IT is said the youth are the future of the country, but for 23-year-old Thabiso Msiya, this is not true as he feels they are being excluded.

His goal is to change this and give young people hope.

With the help of local organisations and businesses, the young man from Luganda recently hosted an event themed, Let’s Change The Conversation, which created awareness of what is possible and also to prove that anything can be achieved with focus and hard work.

“During the session, we invited young, successful people to address young people about different careers and we spoke about issues facing the youth like unemployment, finance, education, career choices, owning businesses and also life in general,” he said.

Msiya said young people are scared of failure. If they fail once, they think it is the end of the road which is not true.

“There is no such thing as failure, rather, it is a learning process. We need to get out of our comfort zones, try different things and own our future. Young people have huge potential and the session was to tell them about the opportunities that are out there and that we need to work together and support each other.”

Msiya said he draws inspiration from everything and everyone’s story around him. “We learn everyday and young people need to stay at school. If they have given up, they can still go back, its never too late.

“We need to keep the people who are suffering the most close to us and not desert them.”

He added there should be more practical application in schools, not just the teaching of theory as that would help young people be employable.

“They also need to look at starting their own businesses and do not wait to be spoon-fed. There are organisations such as Business Network Session who invest in small businesses in the townships,” said Msiya.
