Gogo’s go for goals

Gutsy gogos gravitated to the sports field where they enjoyed a fun day playing netball and soccer proving that age is nothing but a number.

THE Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust moved away from the valley to celebrate women ageing graciously without fear at a sporting fest for Women’s Month in Clermont.

Thandanani Support Group, based at St Boniface Lutheran Church in Clermont, is one of more than 58 support groups in KZN belonging to HACT’s Gogo Programme which works with more than 2 000 gogo’s, many of whom are the sole providers for their families.

“This is the first time we have hosted such a big event and we are excited and honoured to do so,” said Thandanini Gogo Group leader, Lindiwe September.

“The oldest gogo in our group is 93 years old and she is still very active,” she said.

“Because the Clermont gogo group has been with us for a short while, we wanted to take the event out of the valley and introduce our gogos to a different community and interact with other grannies,” explained HACT’s Gogo Support Group Programme Manager, Sister Cwengi Myeni.

Interacting in these support groups gives the gogos confidence and they learn from each other.

“We also learn a lot from them and their experiences. The Clermont gogos organised this event and we were just assisting them in the background. We teach our gogos to do things for themselves and not to wait on other people,” said Myeni.

One of the companies that sponsored this event was Match Research Unit who work on ways to prevent HIV infection.

“Our aim is to empower women and create awareness on HIV and AIDS,” said Dr Mthokozisi Nxongo from the Match Research Unit .

The support group thanked everyone who supported them and the Clermont and KwaDabeka Tourism Association for sponsoring the soccer and netball kits.
