ESCOMBE Primary cleaned up in this year’s maths challenges organised by Organisation for Child Advancement (ORCA) and the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa (AMESA).
Each year, workshops and maths problem-solving challenges are held in the third term to stimulate and develop skills in mathematics, in association with Nelson Mandela Chatsworth Youth Centre and ORCA.
Schools are invited to send their top three Maths pupils in Grades 4, 5, 6 and 7 to the free workshop run by Prof Tony Reddy and Reno Reddy after which there is an awards evening where pupils who excel in the ORCA Challenge, are given recognition.
Grade 4 learners, Priya Sompersadh, Kaynri Naidoo and Abubakar Khan were named the most promising young problem-solvers.
Grade 5 Learners, Hayley Govender, Tasmiyhah, Sonali Singh and Yusaf Salajee all won accolades with Salajee receiving a gold medal for being named the third place winner in the grade.
Grade 6 learners Ashwaylon Dayanand, Barna Naidoo and Caitland Chetty took home bronze medals while Lehar Badal was awarded a gold medal.
In the Grade 7 challenges, Sadhika Doodnath won a gold medal and came second overall in her grade while Yusaf Salajee was awarded a bronze medal.
AMESA represents the interests of the discipline and its members at both national and provincial level and partners with the South African Mathematics Foundation (SAMF) to run annual mathematics problem-solving challenges using strategies to work out problems for Grade 4 to 7 learners.
This year Escombe achieved eight bronze certificates. Learners from Grades 5 to 7 participated in the competition’s final round as part of a group of 14000 learners nationally.
Escombe Primary learners Tasmiyyah Kudoos, Pawandeep Singh and Priyal Moodley, Caitland Chetty, Lehar Badal, Aarti Seebran, Ethan Balmogim and Sadhika Doodnath all took part.
