Spur shares its taste for life with learners

Hillcrest Primary School's learners were tasked with making one of five delicious desserts from Spur's menu in an exciting bake-off competition.

HILLCREST’S Eldorado Spur was abuzz with excitement as dozens of Hillcrest Primary School learners put their baking skills to the test last week.

In a bid to help kids discover their talent and passion as well as give them practical experience in a busy kitchen, Spur invited the budding bakers from the local school to compete in a bake-off competition.

With three to four children in each group, the 13 groups were tasked with baking their choice of a peppermint tart, an Oreo cheese biscuit cheesecake, malva pudding or a chocolate brownie.

They were given an hour to complete their dessert item.

“It was an experience! There were a few challenges but it was so good and the children had so much fun! We wanted to give the children a real kitchen experience while teaching them how to make a product that many of them have had before when they were patrons at the restaurant. This was the first time they actually got to see how it was made – and then make it themselves,” said the Eldorado Spur’s head chef, Moyenda Phiri.

The proud learners watched as parents then tasted the desserts. This was followed by a tasting by the head chef to see if the recipe was followed, the correct ingredients were used as well as judge the presentation and taste.

“This event was held to lay the foundation for them to become tomorrow’s master chefs,” said the Spur’s manager, Joshua Magede.

Sharon Forsyth of Hillcrest Primary School said the children had an absolute ball in the restaurant.

Isabella Crundwell, 11, said, “I’ve just enjoyed making the food and then dipping and tasting as what we were making was also really fun!”
