VIDEO: Hillary widow of man killed in alleged hit and run tells her story

After almost a month, the wife of Courtnay De Koker, who was killed in an alleged hit and run, is still uncertain about the progress of the investigation.

BELINDA De Koker will never forget the day her husband, Courtnay, died in front of her after a vehicle struck him on Sarnia Road in the early hours of the morning, in what police described as a road-rage incident.

More than a month has passed and Belinda contacted the Queensburgh News to share the story of how Courtnay died.

Belinda said she has been bitterly disappointed by the attitude of the police to her requests for more information. “I have not been kept informed, and one of the policemen was rude to me when I visited the station,” she said.

Belinda also said she was disappointed at how the incident had been reported shortly after it had occurred with incorrect information.

“That is why I contacted the Queensburgh News, so that I can tell my own story,” said the tearful widow shortly before the memorial service and wake which was held at a Methodist Church in Kloof and the Hillary Sports Club.

“We were driving at about 12.20pm from a karaoke evening and the car ahead of us was driving quite fast.”

She described how her husband, who she said had a short temper, had confronted the occupants of the car who had also done an illegal U-turn in front of their car.

“When we got to Hillary the car stopped there, and my husband pulled the car door open and got out,” she said. “As he got out of the car they (the drivers in the other car) saw him coming towards them and they spun their car which then hit him.”

“They must have hit him on his side as he was lying there on the side of the road with blood all over him,” she said, close to tears. “They drove off and I was screaming and shouting, and eventually some people came to help me.”

De Koker said the Metro police officers who had come to the scene were very helpful and had even stayed with her until the mortuary van had come to pick up her husband’s body. “It all happened so fast,” she said.

Police investigation

“The incident occurred at approximately 1am on Saturday, 11 May, on Sarnia Road, Hillary,” said Sgt Pam Pillay speaking for Bellair SAPS.

“According to witnesses, there was an altercation between the deceased and the occupants of the vehicle involved,” said Pillay in a statement released to the media.  “The deceased got off his vehicle to approach the driver of the other vehicle,” explained Pillay.

“Anyone with further information should contact the investigating officers,” said Pillay. “They are W/O Ebrahim on 031 451 2824 or Capt Khumalo on 031 451 2819.”
