Young woman dies in N3 freak accident

It was reported that the woman was walking on the freeway with her boyfriend and a group of friends before the tragedy struck.

POLICE are investigating the circumstances that led to the death of a 19-year-old woman who was found at the bottom of a valley in Shongweni.

Members from Durban SAPS Search and Rescue, Durban Metro Police Search and Rescue, Life Response EMS, Netcare911 Rescue, ER24, VEMA and volunteer organisation RescueTech were called out to the N3, near Shongweni, for a rescue operation.

According to Hillcrest Saps communications officer, Capt Linzi Smith, the 19-year-old woman had been walking with her boyfriend and others along the freeway when the group noticed that she was no longer with them.

“Rescuers abseiled down 30m to the valley below and located the victim. Paramedics stabilised her before she was brought up,” said Smith.

The young woman was transported to hospital, but unfortunately died in the early hours of Saturday (18 January).

An inquest docket has being opened and is currently under investigation at Hillcrest SAPS.
