Get ready for African and European football drama this month as the EURO 2020 (European Championship) kicks off and as the CAF Champions league reaches the knockout stages of the competition.
24 teams will be split into 6 groups in this year’s EURO 2020 competition. The EURO 2020 will be played in 11 cities all over Europe with the first game taking place on the 11th of June at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome between Turkey and Italy.
Spectators will finally be able to attend the matches at this year’s tournament and stadiums are expected to have 50% capacity of the venues for the matches. This year’s tournament marks the 60th anniversary of the competition and after much deliberation it has been announced that the tournament will keep the original year of 2020 instead of the 2021 to make it the EURO 2020.
This is due to the competitions commitment to sustainability and changing the name would have produced more waste as branded material was already produced with the EURO 2020 logo. England, France and Belgium are some of the favourite teams going into this year’s competition while the odds are against North Macedonia, Slovakia and Hungary to win the tournament.
The semi finals and final match will be played at Wembley Stadium with the final taking place on the 11th of July. June also sees the semi final matches of the CAF Champions League taking place. Fortunately South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs has advanced through the quarter final matches to reach the semi finals.
The four teams that have progressed are Kaizer Chiefs (South Africa), Espérance Sportive de Tunis (Tunisia), Al Ahly (Egypt) and Wydad AC (Morocco). South Africans will be watching their screens as Kaizer Chiefs take on Wydad AC on the 18th of June when they compete in their first leg encounter.
The match is scheduled to be played at 21:00 and will be played at the same time as the Al Ahly vs ES Tunis match. Teams will then get a week break before heading into their second leg matches that are scheduled for the 25th of June.
The venue for the final still needs to be decided but will take place on the 17th of July.
