Help Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust empower women
The local non-profit organisation's clothing scheme helps create employment for 36 women in the Valley of 1000 Hills.
THE Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust (HACT) appeals to the public to donate their second-hand clothing to its Clothing Scheme.
This initiative, which currently enables 36 unemployed women to earn an income through the sale of donated clothing, generates just under R300 000 per year for local families in need.
“Our Clothing Scheme has been in operation for more than a decade now and during this time has served as a lifeline to many destitute families,” explained HACT’s CEO, Candace Davidson.

“The aim of the scheme is to create practical income-generating opportunities for patients who have recently been discharged from our onsite Respite Unit and/or their immediate family members. Purchasing bags of second-hand clothing for just R15 each, the scheme’s beneficiaries go on to sell the clothes in their community for anything between R300 to R600 per bag. Over the past year, 744 bags with more than 14 880 items of donated clothes have been bought and sold through the successful initiative.”
HACT’s Clothing Scheme co-ordinator, Thobeka Ntshangase, said, “This project is about restoring hope and dignity to people’s lives. Being able to earn a living and feed their families is often our patients’ main concern once they have been discharged from our Respite Unit.”
Clothing can be dropped off at the HACT Centre, 26 Old Main Road, Hillcrest from Monday to Friday between 9am and 3pm.For queries, contact HACT on 031 765 5866.
