Tevlen is tops with technology

Kloof High School's SPAR Star of the Month - August 2020.

KLOOF High School’s deputy head boy, Tevlen Naidoo, is the school’s SPAR Star of the Month.

The 17-year-old achieved a 100 per cent aggregate for round one of a Computer Olympiad.

He was in the top 8.5 per cent of the competition that had 842 participants and only 72 of them achieved a perfect score.

He was excited to learn of his result as the Olympiad challenged him and forced him to use his brain.

“I feel very proud of myself for achieving 100 per cent and I’m excited to do my best in the next round,” he said.

His favourite subjects at school include information technology, physical sciences, mathematics, English, engineering graphic and design.

When he completes matric he hopes to study computer science, mechanical engineering and game design.

“I really enjoy all three of those courses and would like to pursue them further, but my first choice would be computer science,” said Tevlen.

He first started using a computer at a very young age and has always enjoyed technology, from learning about new pieces of tech to fiddling around with new programmes.

“What I love about computers is the freedom of it. You can do almost anything with them. Whatever you like. Whether that be, from programming to designing. It’s all possible on computers and I’ve always found that really cool,” he said.

When he is not at school or completing his homework, Tevlen said he spends his time trying to learn two different programming languages, C++ and Python.

“I’m also messing around in a program called Unity, trying to learn the basics of game development and I’m watching videos in app and game development,” said the enthusiastic teen.

Before the virus and subsequent lockdown, Tevlen was an avid hockey player and was on the district hockey team. He said his other notable achievement was honours for academic in Grade 11.

“As a school, we are very pleased with his achievements and Tevlen looks forward to competing in round two,” said Kloof High School’s marketing manager, Tamaryn Van Wyk.
