Westville cobbler makes a living, one stitch at a time
The friendly Bheki Mthembu has been fixing shoes for the last 23 years, a job which he has done with joy and pride.
MEET Bhekinkosi Mthembu who sits under a tree on the curbside between Barham Road and Master Builders Association in Essex Terrace.
His job is to fix shoes, something he has done with love and dedication for the past 23 years.
Mthembu hit the Westville limelight recently when his work was posted on the Westville info group Facebook page.

The post elicited 13 comments and 25 shares with heartwarming messages to say about the cobbler.
The humble and friendly Mthembu said he was taught by a friend to repair shoes.
“I am only here on Tuesdays and Fridays as I work at the Westville Methodist Church. I do mostly garden work and other odd jobs,” he said.

The father of six who lives in an informal settlement in Clare Estate, said even though he lost his umbrella, which he used for shade, during a fire that ravaged his belongings, he was not deterred from doing his job.
“That did not stop me from continuing with my work, sunshine or rain, you will find me at this spot.”
Mthembu said his work differs around month end as it can get busy and other days are very quiet.

He added that he was taught at a young age that when you do something you must give it your all and do it with pride and love.
“I enjoy fixing shoes and I’m also dedicated to my job at the church,” he said.
