St Mary's DSG, Kloof's primary school SPAR Star of the Month - April 2021.

ST Mary’s DSG, Kloof’s primary school SPAR Star of the Month is Grade 4 learner, Jessica Savage.

At the end of March this year, Jess, who is a member of Nippers, participated in the KZN Lifesaving Championship. She placed 1st in five of the six individual events, namely: surf-swim, run-swim-run, bodyboard, beach sprints and the long run. She also placed 1st in the bodyboard team event and third in the team Taplin event.

At the end of the championship, Jess was announced as the overall U10 female competitor of the competition since she had the most overall points and won a trophy.

Jess started life saving when she was five years old and admitted she was not, at first, all that interested in doing life saving but decided to give it a try. After a few training sessions she was hooked and could not wait to get back to the beach. During these training sessions they do a run along the beach, swim in the sea and compete in beach flags, they also do board races and rescue.

Jess is not only excelling in lifesaving but as a swimmer as well as she won the best swimmer in U10 at St Mary’s championship gala held in term 1 and received a trophy and many certificates. She looks up to Chad le Clos for inspiration and hopes to take her swimming career to the next level, just as he did.

“We are extremely proud of her,” said Jess’ mom, Tracey Savage.
