Thomas More sports new centre

To officially launch the sports centre, the school hosted two games between its 1st teams and staff.

TO kick off the official opening of Thomas More College’s iKhwezi Sports, two fast-paced and fun indoor hockey matches between the 1st boys’ vs staff and the 1st girls’ vs staff were played.

The school’s headmaster, Dave Wiggett, said in both matches great skill and enthusiasm were displayed. The matches were followed by the formal centre opening where Deni Hornsey, the recently retired foundation phase headmistress, unveiled the commemorative plaque that will be mounted at the entrance to the centre. Hornsey joined Thomas More College in 1994 and served as the headmistress of the foundation phase for 18 years.

“Deni Hornsey played an instrumental part in the expansion and development of our beautiful school grounds and had part in the decision making of this extraordinary facility,” said Wiggett. “It was only fitting that we asked our current longest standing staff member (29 years’ service), Carol Mbili, to cut the ribbon and officiate the opening of the centre.”

The iKhwezi Sports Centre currently incorporates a full-size indoor hockey pitch, change rooms, spectator’s ablutions, a wheelchair friendly ablution, grandstands (250 seats) and storage facilities, with plans to include one netball court, two cricket nets and basketball.

Wiggett said, “It is quite fitting, then, that this magnificent centre is being christened The iKhwezi Sports Centre. iKhwezi is, in our region’s lingua franca, the morning star, the guide to lost and weary travellers, the herald of a new day and fresh beginnings. It is constant, it is dependable, it is trustworthy and it is honest in its purpose.”
