Westville NPO reaches out to communities in need

Founder of The Tiny Steps Care Team, Naadia Sheik-Hameed, thanked everyone who helped with donations.

THROUGH much-needed donations from larger foundations, a Westville NPO was able to distribute the items to families in need.

On July 16, the organisation distributed 750 loaves of bread with milk.

Founder of The Tiny Steps Care Team, Naadia Sheik-Hameed said the donation of groceries, fresh produce, socks, blankets and baby apparel, adult diapers, baby formula and diapers has far exceeded their expectations of 300 a week.

“Our goal turned out to an average of 450 a day,” said the grateful Westville resident.

The items were donated to Shongweni Bux Farm, Wyebank, parts of Phoenix, Waterloo, Umkomaas, parts of Newlands West – Hill Grove, Westville and Isipingo Hills. Westville and Upper Highway, Stranraer House, St Theresa’ Children’s Home, Cheshire On Sparks and St Philomena’s Catholic High School for Girls also received the donated items.

Sheik-Hameed said they were grateful to the organisations; Muslims for Humanity, The Natal Memon Jamaat, Africa Muslims Agency, Falaah Projects Gauteng – Socks From Retro Socks Durban, Blankets from SMG Durban and Westville Boys High School, The Kandasamy Movie Crew, Capital parts Empangeni, Fathima Osman, Mumtaz Solwa, Fathima Saley, members from Gauteng and all the local businesses in KZN.

“A local doctor, Dr Katz also included us in a project to rebuild and restore farming communities through a sponsor from an organisation called Servolution South Africa.

“Through that project, 60 000 seedlings were transported to Durban from seven farmers in Gauteng. We are elated that we received a share of that and have actively been on the ground distributing to Farms in Shongweni Bux Farm, Wyebank informal settlement, Umkomaas-Craigeburn, Welbedacht and Assagay,” said Sheik-Hameed.

The Westville resident said each farm received seedlings in large quantities of spinach, cabbage and butternut in an attempt to rebuild, empower farming communities and rise above the recent economic downturn in KZN.

“We will we be involved in follow-ups over the coming weeks,” she added.

As the founder of Tiny Steps Care Team, Sheik-Hameed sent out a plea from communities to support them so they can continue distributing hampers to those in need.

“Much emphasis will be placed on vetted families and homes like our baby houses and children’s home that are still in need. A special thank you to every volunteer who has spent hours on the road, assisting with distributions,” she said.

Currently, the organisation is trying to secure water distributions as well for this week as there is a major repair being performed and thousands of households will be left with out water.

“Thankfully we have today, July 26, managed to secure 2500 litres from Africa Muslims Agency and await feed back from the Gift of Givers Durban who have also assisted us through these trying times,” said Sheik-Hameed.
