Pinetown Facebook page takes residents down memory lane

Max Rossi created the Facebook page, Good Ole Pinetown to dig up good old memories.

CREATED with a purpose to transport residents back in time to the memories of the good old days, the Good Ole Pinetown Facebook page was started in 2017 by Max Rossi.

Speaking about the page, which attracted 10 000 members within a few weeks, Rossi said, “Numbers fluctuate, but the group still has many regulars and on Friday, August 27 the group had 12111 members.

“I had to block some members due to inappropriate comments and posts. This is a nostalgia group, purely a get together. It’s all about friends, present and past, reconnecting by sharing news about Pinetown during its heyday, digging up old memories and reuniting from old school days.

“We do not allow racial insults, swearing, adult content or advertising. Among the popular posts in the group are pictures of the old adverts.”

The 60-year-old said it is always interesting to see the cost of items from the past. “For instance the price of petrol was just 25 cents a litre. In those days, you could fill a tank for R70 and do a whole month’s grocery for R150,” say Rossi, who was born in Italy, but moved to South Africa with his family when he was just a year-old.

Vintage photos, objects, games, television programmes and memes are very popular on the group’s timeline.

The Pinetown resident said his wish for the area is for the crime to decrease.

“There has always been crime, but it was very low back then and we used to walk at night without any fear.”

When asked about one of his highlights of growing up in Pinetown, Rossi said, dancing and frequenting discos and pubs with good friends.

“We did not have many sport arenas; there were only hotels, bars and discos for the youth,” he said.

His favourite day was a Sunday afternoon /night, at one of the popular hotels which was famous for its mouth-watering curry and then a movie. The Facebook fanatic encouraged people to join the group on condition that they stay in the area or are former residents.

“Pinetown gets so much of bad publicity and the page is a nice platform for people to meet and reconnect. It was also through this group that I received assistance after I went through a hard time due to lockdown. I am very grateful to everyone,” he said.
