Department urges owners to vaccinate pets

World Rabies Day is observed around the world each year on September 28.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will conduct free rabies vaccinations, for dogs and cats, throughout north Durban from Monday, October 4.

The department added it is compulsory for all domestic pets to be vaccinated against rabies, and failure to do so is illegal and a public health risk.

World Rabies Day will be observed annually on September 28 throughout the world to raise awareness about rabies prevention and to highlight the progress that has been made to defeat the horrifying disease.

Durban North resident and pet owner, Nic Pender, urged the public to get involved and make use of the free vaccinations.

“Rabies is 100% preventable if one seeks health care immediately after being bitten, scratched or licked by an animal suspected to be infected with rabies.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to use this platform as its free. Vaccinating your pets against rabies protects your family and also protects other members of the public and their pets,” he said.

Tuesday, October 5
 Glenhills – park (corner of the Malacca Road and Rinaldo Road) from 9:00 to 10:00.
 Glenashley – playlot on Adelaide Drive and Adelaide Place from 10.30 to 11.30.
 Virginia – Danville Park (Danville Avenue) from 12.00 to 13:00.
 Rosehill/Briardene – Seaton Park (Lothian Road) from 9:00 to 10:00.
 Durban North – playlot (corner of St Kilda and High Ridge Road) from 10.30 to 11.30
