Fabulous reads – Gripping novel unleashes magic and mayhem

Book review - Black Water Sister by Zen Cho.

Black Water Sister, Zen Cho, Pan Macmillan, ISBN: 9781509800001

FOLLOW the twisting tale of Jessamyn, a girl who, with her parents, relocates back to Malaysia straight after her graduation.

Jess’s late grandmother’s spirit enters and inhabits her body to enact the vengeance she felt she was rightfully denied when she passed away. While engaged in these revenge-fuelled missions, Jess finds herself in many dangerous situations where she fights off numerous thugs, destroys a sacred shrine and is forced to extricate herself from the terrifying grip of a goddess’s grasp.

ALSO READ: Fabulous reads – Delve into gripping Amish murder mystery

During all of this excitement, Jess is yet to find an opportunity to tell her homophobic and racist parents that she is in a relationship with an Indian girl.

This novel is filled to the brim with Malaysian fantasy, supernatural beings, ghosts, deities and a hint of comedy. While I am not usually one for fantasy novels, I was truly gripped and could not wait to find out how the tale ended. It is a strange yet compelling read.
