Kenneth celebrates a century of memories

Hillcrest resident, Kenneth Bird turned a 100 on Wednesday, October, 6. He described his life as nothing short of interesting.

HILLCREST resident, Kenneth Bird turned a 100 on Wednesday, October 6 and said it is through ‘God’s help’ that he has reached this milestone.

He was born in Manchester, England and his family moved to London when he was five. Bird described his life as nothing short of interesting as he initially served as a home guard in World War 2.

“From 1940 to 1946, I was in the British Navy, and survived our ship being hit by a torpedo. I served with pride as we were fighting for and protecting our country,” said a proud Bird.

In 1950, he tied the knot with the love of his life, Beryl Charlton. “We met in Johannesburg, were married for 67 years and she passed away in 2016,” he said. They had already lost their only son Richard to cancer. He has two grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren who live in Canada.

From posting letters at a bank, he worked his way up until he was the manager. “I worked in a bank all my life.”

When asked about a childhood highlight, he smiled and said, “I had a big teddy bear. It was my comforter. ”Growing up, he said he loved cricket, swimming and playing soccer.

“My hobbies were anything mechanical. Anything to do with motorcars and motorbikes. I also enjoyed doing house maintenance.”

Bird also survived both his legs being amputated in his early 90s, and is generally very healthy. He maintains a balanced diet, very occasionally enjoys a glass of wine and has never smoked. “I also enjoy pudding,” he smiled. “If it is light on sugar.”

As a former deacon, Bird is still heavily involved with church work at the Hillcrest Baptist Church.

“I started a group with elderly ladies who are widows, although there are also a few younger ones. The purpose is for them to not feel lonely, and to motivate and encourage one another.”

He added that he felt so blessed to reach this milestone. “It is a great feeling and I am thankful,” he said.
