Upper highway students excel in leadership course

The BYLP, which took place on the banks of the majestic uTugela River in KZN, was a flurry of activity thanks to the unique and memorable course presented to the adolescents, who are in Grade 9 and Grade 11.

LOCAL learners were a part of fifty young people from across South Africa, and eSwatini to complete a week-long once-in-a-lifetime experience all thanks to Boxer, who recently hosted the 20th edition of the legendary Boxer Youth Leadership Programme (BYLP) in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

The BYLP crew transported the learners to the venue after picking 50 winners from hundreds of entries via an essay contest.

Many of the learners had never been on an airplane or visited KZN before. The team was introduced to a world of new adventures, challenges, and other great activities on March 28. The Ventures Group presented a five-day programme that culminated in an official graduation ceremony where each student got accreditation for their work.

Mpilonhle Zulu from Pinetown was one of 11 KZN school learners who learned leadership skills, put their mental and physical abilities to the test, and established lifelong friendships while experiencing a variety of new and unexpected firsts.

“I really enjoyed this programme. It taught me a host of new skills and gave me the belief that I can be who I truly believe I am, a leader!” said Zulu.

For some students, the adventure began right away as they flew to KZN to meet up with their peers and participate in activities such as abseiling, archery, obstacle courses, hikes, leadership workshops, and even personal leadership ’round tables’ with Boxer group executive: stakeholder sustainability and engagement, Ntombi Dludla and the programme’s official partner Clover.

“To spend time with these incredible young leaders and pass on important skills and knowledge to them is a special moment for Boxer and for the future of both SA and eSwatini. Boxer is proud to offer this programme to our youth, with the promise that lifelong friendships, leadership skills and unforgettable memories will be taken back with them to their homes, schools and communities. We cannot wait to host the 21st edition next year!” said Dludla.
