Pinetown resident turns 102

Doone Village resident, Kathleen Rose, celebrates 102 years of life.

THE saying, ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’, definitely rings true for Pinetown resident Kathleen Rose who turned a 102 on Monday, May 30.

Rose, fondly known as Kay, was born in Escombe, Queensburgh in 1920.

Sitting comfortably at her residence in Doone Village Retirement Centre, the kind Rose smiled and said she did not even realise it was her birthday.

“I am 102, and I am happy to have lived this long. I do not smoke, and I do not drink; I eat one apple a day and healthy food throughout the day,” she said.

She attended St Mary’s Kloof before being a boarder at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School.

“I enjoyed knitting, sewing and crocheting. I used to be involved in church work at the Escombe Methodist Church and the Christ Church in Pinetown,” said Rose.

The centenarian, who has resided at Doone Village for the past 40 years, looks healthy and fit for her age although her memory is not the same.

Rose said she worked as an admin before marrying her life partner, Stanley, on May 31, 1943.

She has one daughter, Margaret, two grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
