Mariannhill traffic officer appears in court for perjury

Police warned the public to refrain from opening false cases.

A MARIANNHILL traffic officer appeared at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday, June 13, facing charges of perjury and defeating the ends of justice.

He was released on R1 000 bail and will appear again in court on Friday, July 1.

The 46-year-old officer was arrested on Friday, June 10 after he reported a false case at the Mariannhill police station on Wednesday, June 8.

KZN police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said the suspect allegedly reported that he was returning from work when he was approached by three unknown men outside his house in Savanna Park.

“He told police that he was held up by the suspects who demanded his service pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition. The docket was allocated to an investigating officer who investigated the matter further.”

“During the investigation, it was established that there were contradictions in the man’s statement. The complainant was re-interviewed, and it was discovered that he had reported a false case,” said Ngcobo.

According to Ngcobo, it was established by the investigating officer that he had lost his firearm and did not report the matter to his employer.

He was arrested and detained at the Mariannhill police station.

Ngcobo appealed to the public to refrain from opening false cases.

“It is a criminal offence to lie under oath, and those who do so will face the full might of the law,” she said.

I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
