Residents stand together for better service delivery

Members of some Upper Highway communities revive their ratepayers’ association.

THE Waterfall, Crestholme and Forest Hills communities are calling for better service delivery as they revive the ratepayers’ association. Spreading the message, the association gathered at Waterfall on Sunday, March 11, to invite community members to join the organisation.

Speaking to the Highway Mail, Bruce Henderson, who is the chairperson of the organisation, said there was a ratepayers’ association before which fell away because of lack of membership.

“While facing all the issues we have right now, we thought it would be best that we take a stand and do something. We got together again to restart.

“The end goal is to have a functional community. We have attained an NPC number so we can do fundraisers and keep the work going. We are not politically affiliated; we are residents and ratepayers who want to see our money’s worth,” said Henderson.

The Waterfall, Crestholme and Forest Hills Ratepayers’ Association aims to monitor the local government to ensure it performs as a public body should, engaging with the public. The organisation also plans to direct members’ complaints to the municipality regarding enquiries of non-services, billing issues and lack of maintenance of infrastructure.

Henderson said the success of the organisation and its plan is dependent on the community’s response and participation.

“We are calling all residents to join us in making our communities functional and for ratepayers and community members to get what is due to them – which is proper services,” he said.

Community members who wish to find out more information about the organisation can email wcfratepayers@gmail.com or contact Tash on 082 752 9730.
