Load-shedding resumes in eThekwini

Following the end of a three-week municipal worker strike, the eThekwini Municipality would resume load-shedding in the metro from Wednesday, April 3.

THE City has confirmed that load-shedding will resume on Wednesday, April 3, from 06:00.

This comes after the strike, which began on February 27 by some eThekwini Municipality workers affiliated with the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu), which centred around a pay dispute, caused havoc for service delivery around the city.

The eThekwini Metro was shielded from rolling blackouts due to the high number of electricity faults and outages due to the strike.

“Load-shedding affecting the eThekwini Municipality was previously suspended due to the illegal strike that occurred in March. Faults have been reduced to normal levels, and the public is therefore notified that load-shedding will resume tomorrow, April 3, at 06:00,” the City said in a statement.

Power utility Eskom suspended load-shedding until further notice with an update due on Wednesday should there be any significant changes to the national power grid.

Last month, Durban mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said the strike had been accompanied by ‘violent acts of criminality’ which have resulted in the death of one municipal worker and injuries to several others.

Kaunda confirmed that 81 employees are on precautionary suspension for misconduct committed during the illegal strike while 1 891 employees have been given notices of misconduct and 88 employees have been dismissed for their participation in the unlawful industrial action.
