Celebrating International Children’s Book Day with books from South African authors

We look at some of the fun things to do on International Children's Book Day and some children's books written by South African authors that would make a great gift for the children in your life.

INTERNATIONAL Children’s Book Day, celebrated annually on April 2, aims to raise awareness of the importance of reading and creating a culture of reading among children as early in their lives as possible. The theme for this year’s International Children’s Book Day is ‘The small is big in a book.’

The theme emphasises the significance of gifting children books that can shape their thinking and expand their imagination. And, while gifting a book may seem like a small gesture, it can have a significant impact on a child.

Fun things for children to do to celebrate the day:

  • Children can recommend books they’ve read to their friends and why they recommend those books.
  • Children can swap books with their peers to read more exciting books without having to buy them.
  • They can dress up as a favourite book character.
