Marlaine Nair takes the reins as the new head of the Democratic Alliance's councillors in West Durban.

THE Democratic Alliance (DA) has appointed Marlaine Nair as the new leader of its councillors in West Durban. In 2022, Nair was sworn in as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature, where she served as the DA’s spokesperson on Human Settlements and Public Works. Following the 2024 provincial elections, she became chairperson of the Legislature’s Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) Portfolio Committee.

As leader of the DA councillors in West Durban, Nair said she is committed to responsive governance, transparency and addressing residents’ concerns effectively.

“Our councillors face many difficulties when trying to resolve service delivery issues, however, they are committed to providing feedback to residents even if they are unable to assist with a particular problem. I believe that communication is key,” she said.
