Meditation classes for children promote peace

The Kadampa Meditation Centre offers meditation classes for children to help them promote inner peace from a young age.

IN a world filled with digital distractions and fast-paced living, the Kadampa Meditation Centre Durban is offering a peaceful antidote: monthly meditation classes designed specifically for children. These sessions aim to help young minds become calmer, more focused, and emotionally balanced from an early age.

A registered non-profit organisation, the Kadampa Meditation Centre is dedicated to spreading the benefits of inner peace through meditation. The centre offers a tranquil space where children can learn valuable life skills in a nurturing and supportive environment.
Kelsang Jampel, who leads the children’s classes at the centre, said there is no better time to start meditation than in childhood. “We live in a time where distractions are everywhere — from television to smartphones. Kids are born into this digital world, so it’s vital that they learn how to sift through information and stay grounded amid the chaos.

“The children’s classes combine Buddhist-inspired teachings with playful and engaging activities. Each class includes a short breathing meditation, storytelling, and creative crafts — all designed to promote loving-kindness, focus, and emotional resilience.
“Every class is self-contained, so parents can bring their children whenever it suits them. The goal is to give kids practical tools they can use to solve problems and approach life with a happy heart. We also encourage values such as consideration, calmness, and kindness,”  Jampel explained.
