“Today, we received the heartbreaking news of the passing of Brigadier Leon Matthysen. It has shaken us to our core. The entire community is in shock, and hearts are heavy with sorrow. We have not only lost a policeman — we’ve lost a leader, a friend, and one of the finest men to ever wear the badge.
Leon, you were more than just the Station Commander of Pinetown — you were the heart and soul of the town. Your leadership, strength, and deep care for others made a real and lasting difference in people’s lives. You didn’t sit behind a desk — you led from the front. You were always out there, night after night, patrolling the streets, guiding your team, and protecting the people.
We remember the early days, back in 2005 and 2006, when the idea of neighbourhood watches started to take shape.”
Speaking to the Highway Mail, Pinetown CPF chairman Justin Bosse said, “I am lost for words.
“It’s still hitting home quite hard. I have known Matthysen for more than 20 years, when I was first in the police back in the ’90s.

“One thing I could say about him, he was a true legend. He always put his members first and he was such a dedicated member not only to the station, but to his colleagues, his friends, his family. He made a huge impact in Pinetown when he took over as station commander,” said Bosse, adding that the brigadier will truly be missed.
