Tow truck scams on the rise: What every motorist should know

Juan Hanekom of the South African Motor Body Repairers' Association reveals that incidents involving corrupt tow operators are on the rise in the country.

WHEN your car breaks down or gets damaged in a road accident, the appearance of a tow truck just when you need it most can seem like a miracle.

But, if you or the police did not summon the truck, you could be lined up for a costly scam. Being involved in a car accident is distressing enough without the added complication of tow-truck scams. Unfortunately, incidents involving unscrupulous towing operators misrepresenting themselves as authorised service providers are on the rise in South Africa, according to Juan Hanekom, a national director of South African Motor Body Repairers’ Association (Sambra).

In a bid to tackle this issue, Hanekom shares the tips below that can be utilised by motorists to avoid being a tow-truck scam victim. He advises that motorists need to remain vigilant at all times at accident scenes.

The national director says: “While many towing companies are reputable, a growing number exploit vulnerable drivers, particularly when they are still in shock after a collision. These tactics are becoming increasingly sophisticated, so it is vital for motorists to stay calm and follow the correct steps.”

Here are key tips to protect yourself as a motorist on the scene:

Know your insurer’s approved tow service: Many insurers have contracts with accredited towing services. Keep these details handy and insist you personally call your insurer or broker. Do not allow a third party to do this.

Verify before you act: Do not take a call from an unknown number at face value. If someone claims to be your insurer, end the call and dial your insurance company’s official number directly.

Check identification: Ensure that any tow truck operator on the scene is from an accredited service provider.

Read before you sign: Never sign any document without reading it thoroughly. Digital signatures, in particular, can authorise charges you may not be aware of.

Call for help: If you are unsure, call a trusted family member or friend for guidance before agreeing to any towing service.
