Pinetown police commemorate Mandela Day

Members from the police station handed over about 50 food hampers to job seekers in the Pinetown area as part of commemorating Mandela Day.

IN celebration of Mandela Day the SAPS Pinetown’s Gender-Based Violence Office, in collaboration with the station Social Worker, Nokukhanya Cele, and Community Liaison Officer Wandile Dladla, embarked on a meaningful outreach initiative aimed at supporting men within the community.

Approximately 50 hampers, containing a variety of essential items, were distributed to men who regularly gather near the station in search of employment opportunities.

The station’s communications officer, Jennifer Naidu, said: “These men are often seen waiting each morning, hoping to secure work for the day. Recognising their daily challenges, SAPS Pinetown identified them as the beneficiaries of this year’s Mandela Day initiative.”

Sector Commander Warrant Officer Desan Pillay co-ordinated the partnership between SAPS Pinetown and community stakeholders, namely CRO Enterprises, Quality’s Supermarket, Marian Bakery (Pink Shop), and Vanessa Coulsin of the Ashley Neighbourhood Watch (NHW).

“Through their generous donations of hampers and essential items, the partners played a meaningful role in making the SAPS Pinetown Mandela Day initiative a success, bringing hope and practical support to men within the community.

“SAPS Pinetown extends its sincere appreciation to all the donors and community partners whose generosity and commitment to uplifting others made this initiative possible. Their willingness to give back reflects the true spirit of Nelson Mandela’s legacy of compassion, dignity, service and ubuntu.

“Mandela Day reminds us that each of us has the power to make a positive difference, no matter how small the act. Through partnerships between the South African Police Service and the community, we continue to strengthen relationships and build a safer, more caring society for all,” said Naidu.

Cele, from LifeLine – Durban, said the latter organisation had proposed that hampers be distributed this year so that the job seekers can have something to take back home for their families.

“In previous years we would share sandwiches, juices and soup but this time we proposed the food hampers so that their families back home can also benefit,” said Cele.
