FOLLOWING a very successful Founders’ Day celebration on July 31, where retired and previous educators and staff were invited to attend an assembly and the unveiling of the 50th Jubilee commemorative plaque, Hillcrest High School (HHS) hosted a well supported Market and Reunion Day on August 1.

“Our guest speaker for our Founders’ Day assembly was past principal, Mr Craig Girvin, who served the school in that capacity from 1999 to 2022,” said HHS principal Denise Knight. “He took the learners on a journey of highlights from the past 50 years, including momentous periods such as the integration of black learners into the school – a transition which was voted for unanimously by the parent body at the time.”

The next morning, despite a chilly start to the day, “Old Boys and Girls” pitched up to participate in a wide range of activities hosted around the school. From Indoor hockey and netball matches where the past pupils took on the current HHS 1st teams, to a mixed Old Girls’ and Old Boys’ vs HHS 1st Boys’ and Girls’ touch rugby match, the sports venues were a hive of activity.

A stage, set up on the school field, gave past pupils a chance to take a trip down memory lane and perform for learners and parents from their alma mater. Included in the programme were performances from the talented HHS Gospel Choir and “Legends” from the highly successful school play which, in keeping with the theme of the 50th, celebrated musical legends from the past five decades. Past Pupils were also invited to tour the school, visiting the hall to show their families where their names were captured in the history of the school.

The market, which was well attended by locals from Hillcrest and offered a wide range of vendors, kept visitors busy browsing in between fixtures, and well fed with delicious food options. A range of inflatable activities kept the youngsters entertained while the Rugby 7s U18 Tournament played out on the two main fields.

“It was a jam-packed day which seemed to be enjoyed by all, and we have had lovely feedback from past pupils, educators, parents and learners on how much they enjoyed the entire 50th Golden Jubilee weekend,” said Knight. “We are sure that our learners will remember this time fondly, and hope they will return as past pupils themselves, when the school commemorates milestones in the future.”
