Birchwood residents warned that their tap water is unsafe to drink
Residents of the Pinetown suburb have been asked to boil tap water before using it for cooking and drinking.
THE public has been advised via an urgent notice from the eThekwini Municipality that tap water in the Birchwood area is unsafe to drink.
The municipality issued a public notice on August 18, warning that the Birchwood tap water does not meet acceptable standards, and it should therefore not be used for drinking or cooking. Residents in the area are advised to boil the water for a minute before use.

The municipality states that an investigation is underway into the source of the contaminant.
This follows a similar eThekwini Municipality statement on July 25, announcing that the Birchwood potable water was deemed ‘not of good quality’ after test results were received. At the time, the eThekwini Municipality stated they had ‘taken immediate action by isolating the reservoir with a team flushing the pipes as part of the sanitation processes’ and that they continued to ‘monitor drinking water according to the International Standard Organisation 17025 stipulations in accredited laboratories’.
