Upper Highway roads – a nightmare

Upper Highway residents have raised their frustrations about the number of potholes on the main roads.

RESIDENTS have described the conditions of some of the main roads in the Upper Highway as nothing but treacherous and have pleaded with authorities to repair them before someone gets killed.

Graham Rice said he has sent numerous emails to the eThekwini Municipality, and to date, there has been no response.

“The Old Main Road from Hammarsdale intersection, going up to Cato Ridge, is in shocking condition and in urgent need of repair. A section of the road is about to collapse near the Railway 6 Station, and someone could be killed.

“The potholes in the roads are a major issue as cars are swerving onto the wrong side of the road to avoid them.

“There will be a serious accident very soon,” said the concerned resident.

Rice said it puzzles him that some of the potholes that were repaired about a month ago were washed away by the first rain.

“The workers just swept cold tar into the holes without even a manual stamper. This is just a total waste of taxpayers’ money,” he said.

“Another few rains and the road is going to collapse down the hill and probably take a motorist down with it. It is creeping farther and farther towards the middle of the lane with every rain we have,” said Rice.

He noted that recently, a driver hit one of the potholes which caused the car to roll. “Luckily, nobody was killed, but are the authorities waiting for someone to be killed before they take this matter seriously?” he asked.

He added that the road is very busy with huge trucks driving on it all day.

A Botha’s Hill resident also raised his concern about the condition of the Old Main Road in Hillcrest going into Botha’s Hill.

He said the road is in terrible condition. The resident also said he has sent several emails to the City. He added that it is such a disgrace that the road that is used for two international events – the Comrades Marathon and the Amashova Cycle Race – is in such a sad state.

In a video that was shared on Facebook Dala U Crew, a man shows the poor workmanship of fixes of the potholes on Inanda Road from Waterfall to Crestholme, where they are only filled with stone and cement. He points out the tar and rubble that is left on the sides of the road.

eThekwini Municipality did not comment by the time of going to print.
