Uncut grass an eyesore and health hazard

A Malvern resident is concerned about the grass in the Main Road which has not been cut for more that two years.

RATS have found a playground in a Malvern resident’s ceiling due to overgrown grass in the area that has not been cut for more that two years.

Avashini Pillay said she has resided in the area for 10 years and has never witnessed such filth.

“This area was always kept neat and tidy, but now, they just cut the edges on top of the roadside. The uncut grass has turned into a bush – it is not just an eyesore and health hazard, but it also poses danger for us as residents as criminals will pounce on us,” said the concerned resident.

As a result, Pillay said she had been forced to install more security measures. “I was once almost hijacked in my driveway. It is so scary driving into my home at night with this dense bush in front of my house.”

She told the Queensburgh News that when she moved into her home, she never expected that she would experience this. She cannot even relax outside her beautiful home as the bush is an absolute eyesore.

“I have watched it grow and grow, and no one bothers to cut it. I am fed up; I do not know what to do anymore. My daughter struggles to study as the rats are running in the ceiling. I have to always hire people to remove them, and my dog gets distracted by them running down the driveway.

“As residents, we feel so unsafe as we always have to look out whenever the dogs bark. I appeal to the authorities to come cut the grass,” she said with a sigh.

Ward 63 councillor Chris van der Berg said the municipality is a mess.

“I have raised this and other issues like it. These are basic service-delivery issues, and the City cannot even get these right. Everything in this city is a fight, and that shows a failed city. As much as the mayor has made promises to rectify some of the issues in his budget speech in Council today, this is what they have been saying for years, and things are getting worse, not better.”

He added that he will keep at the City for what they should be doing automatically.
